Sleep doesn’t help if it’s your soul that’s tired.

This evening, I attended the first of four classes entitled “Sleep Well, Live Well.”  We all know how important sleep is to our well-being and I wanted to take these classes to remedy my not-so-perfect sleep patterns.

Before I was out-of-work, I didn’t have many deep nights of sleep.  I woke up several times during the night and needed two alarms (and several swats of both snooze alarms) to make myself get out of bed.  Now, I don’t worry about what time I need to get to bed in order to get a good night’s sleep before having to tackle a morning alarm (or two).

My sleep patterns have changed recently.  When my friends get together and we talk about our ailments (c’mon, who’s with me?), I used to brag about sleeping through the night without having a nature-calls break.  Now?  I’ll be asleep three or four hours and my bladder will wake me up.  After a potty break, I am able to go back to sleep for another three hours.

I have almost no trouble falling asleep (sleep-onset insomnia) and, because I easily fall back asleep after going to the bathroom, I don’t suffer from sleep-maintenance insomnia.  However, I’m not sure that I get into a deep REM stage (the dream stage) of sleep, which one should be reaching at least four times a night.  I’ve just recently started remembering bits of my dreams once or twice a week or so, but I need to write that down immediately.  By the time I get into the shower, I’ve already forgotten most of the dream.

Our homework assignment every week is to keep a daily sleep log with questions about caffeine intake, daily exercise, feeling refreshed, and stress level.  I’m thankful I can likely answer “yes” to “did you relax today” every day this week.  Can you?
