Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard): You can be as you choose to be. It’s an act of discipline sometimes, but it can be done.
Shannon and I saw the traveling production of The Bodyguard last night and it was terrific! Deborah Cox played the Whitney Houston role and she was amazing. Cox was actually a backup singer for Houston in the 80s and she carries herself just like Whitney, while looking like a young Vanessa Williams.
My friends Marcy and Mark saw the show a few weeks ago in Los Angeles and it was one of the three performances in a week that the lead role is to be performed by one of her understudies. Imagine knowing more than one role in a play or musical in its entirety!
If you can’t think of what the musical looks like after seeing the 1992 movie, The Bodyguard movie, just picture Kevin Costner singing and Ralph Waite dancing. Wait, is it possible that the movie is 25 years old? Good grief.
Last night’s The Bodyguard is the last show of the 2016-2017 season, and our first show for the 2017-2018 season isn’t until this coming November. Happily included in the new season is Hamilton and I’ve been looking forward to seeing that show for a while! Granted, it’s a long way from Lin-Manuel Miranda starring in the show, but I’m sure each touring company is top-notch. It’s still another eleven months until we see it. =(
